    Songwriting with the Dixie Chicks

    Dan in Real Life

On the main DCX page, you can read my in-depth interview with songwriter extraordinaire Dan Wilson, who co-wrote six tracks on Taking The Long Way and just released his debut solo album, Free Life.

Among other things, Dan discusses his decision to cover "Easily Silence," the origin of "Lullaby," and why he's been listening to the Dixie Chicks discography for the past few years.

I'm quite thrilled to share a transcript of my conversation with Dan, who is incredibly thoughtful and engaging.  Before my tenure here ended, I really wanted to obtain and provide insight into the Dixie Chicks' songwriting process; needless to say, this interview opportunity turned out to be a beautiful thing.

    Junichi: Awesome interview!!!
See they are all normal just like the rest of us!  Not like these Divas Britney and Lindsay Lohan...i listned to Britney's album online...n usually i love her music...im not one to judge based on what an artist does and based on what the media says (obviously) and i really did not like her songs on her album, they are...dunno..they don't have a good melody she talks about her butt in one of the songs and photographers taking pictures of it, and i think theres a song about boys bein her toys...does she really want her kids growing up n listening to this stuff?  n sayin "hey thats my mom"  they r gonna flee to K. Fed....her songs just have nothing to them...Gimme more is an alright song, but nothing else really stuck out for me...i was disappointed...i love her music n grew up listenin to her n makin up dances and singin her songs ALL the time with my friends...maybe she'll settle down eventually...hopefully...

FoxNews item today and their headline is:

Dixie Chick Urges Donations to Defense Fund for Murderers.

    Then Rush said

RUSH: This can't be.  Dixie Chicks singer starts defense fund for convicted child killers?  Tell me I'm not reading that correctly.  Am I reading that right?  "Dixie Chick Urges Donations to Defense Fund for Murderers." What's this babe's name?  I'm having a mental block.  The lead singer, Natalie something or other, Natalie -- whew.  Wow.

Junichi, as ALWAYS you do such a fine job with your photos and writing style. I will so MISS YOU, when you are gone. When will Junichi be done...anyone know ? You really put us in the moment as if We are there. There is no replacement for you. For the record. Halloween is my Absolute Favorite Holiday.  I love it more than Xmas and I would have KILLED (not literally speaking) to go to the Halloween Party at the Pasdar house.  Not just because I am absolutely enthralled with the Chicks, but simply because looks like Nat threw a killer party and I would have had a blast.  From the 11 Foot tall Jack Skellington to Guitar Hero and Karaoke around back.  I jam on Guitar Hero man, although I am certain the Chicks or any of their band would sink me for sure -lol. Crazy to think I was actually in L.A. at the time too just coming down off the high from their Nokia show on the 27th that I flew out to see.  Instead...on Halloween I spent the morning at our fav. breakfast restaurant out there (John O'Groats)...then the day at Hermosa and Manhattan beach and then went to a late show  of the Disney Digital 3D version of Nitemare Before Christmas with my other half. Then partied some around the Beaches after.  For the record...I am a collector of NMBC stuff.  Well, Anywayyy...GREAT JOB  Junichi....and SWEET party Nat.

    Wow.

That was really, really good. It was interesting to hear Dan's side of the process and to find out how the songs on TTLW came to fruition. I am so glad that Rick Rubin put him together with the Chicks to create such a fabulous collection of songs.

Thank you Junichi for asking just the right questions!
